Serving in Silence: The Value of Invisible Work in Ministry
Reading time: 4 minutes
A few days after I was freshly minted as a deaconess, I received a call that caught me off guard.
What started as a simple check-in quickly turned into something heavier. The friend on the line shared that someone she knew was actually upset—almost offended—that I had been appointed.
“They don’t understand why it was you,” she said. “They don’t ever see you at church. You’re not at every program, not always visible. They feel like you don’t really do anything.”
I let out a quiet laugh—not because it didn’t sting, but because I’ve come to understand how often people confuse presence with impact.
But she didn’t stop there. She shared how she’d spoken up—how she explained that what I carry isn't always on display. That I serve in roles beyond what most people see. That I labor quietly—locally and nationally—supporting leaders, coordinating efforts, building systems, and helping move the vision of the church forward in ways that aren’t always announced or applauded.
Her words were a balm. But the experience was a revelation.
Your work can be real, weighty, and Spirit-led—and still be invisible to the crowd.
And if you're not careful, the lack of visibility can make you question your value.
But let me tell you what I had to remind myself:
Some of the most kingdom-impacting work happens offstage.
It’s the prayer warrior covering the ministry at 3am.
It’s the admin adjusting the schedule when no one’s looking.
It’s the person who helps keep a leader from burning out by simply handling what needs to be done.
You may not be on the mic, but you're holding up someone who is.
You may not be seen, but you're securing what matters.
To every Vision Runner who’s ever felt overlooked, underestimated, or quietly criticized because your work doesn’t shout—
I see you. More importantly, God sees you.
Your yes still counts.
Your obedience still echoes.
Your work still builds.
You don’t have to be front and center to be faithful.
You don’t have to be celebrated to be effective.
God is not keeping score based on how loud or visible your work is. He’s looking at your posture, your sacrifice, and your heart.
So if you’re in a season where it feels like no one notices what you’re carrying—
Keep showing up. Keep building. Keep serving with excellence.
Because heaven sees it all.
And the kingdom is being advanced in ways you may never fully realize this side of eternity.
You are not invisible.
You are invaluable.
